California Proposition 56 Tobacco Tax is in effect as of April 1st, 2017

On November 8, 2016, Californians voted to pass California Proposition 56. Proposition 56 was a ballot proposition that proposed to increase taxes on tobacco and "tobacco related products." The proposition was passed by voters on November 8th of 2016 with 8,980,448 votes with 64.43%. In 2016 the tobacco tax rate in California came out to California roughly $0.87 per pack of cigarettes. As of April 1st, 2017, that tax rate has risen to $2.87 per pack of 20 cigarettes or 27.30 percent of the wholesale cost of the product. At that time in 2016, the average state tax rate for tobacco was $1.65 per pack of cigarettes. A total of 34 states as well as D.C., had higher tobacco taxes than that of California's.
