A Bad E-liquid Storage Idea: Refridgeration

When it comes to the storage of your bottles of e-liquid, there are some things that you need to keep in mind to ensure the best quality when it is used. There has been lots of wordplay about whether it is good to store the liquid in the refrigerator. Most of the brands tell you that storage should be in a cool, dark area to ensure the best quality. It should be kept away from sunlight and any source of direct heat.


The obvious thought is that it would be alright to store your e-liquids in the refrigerator simply because it is a cool, dark place. But you should take the time to understand that the fridge may not be the best place for storage.

If e-liquids are kept in a refrigerator for any extended period, it may result in the degradation of various kinds of flavors. After all, one of the attractive reasons we purchase e-liquids are for the variety of flavors that we can enjoy. However, flavors that are concentrated can crystallize and ruin the flavor, as well as destroy the chemical properties of the liquid.

There are two basic ingredients that most e-liquids have, Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). These compounds will change their composition when they are exposed to extreme temperature change. The definition here means any wide change in temperature from room temperature is likely to change the substance to the point where you wouldn’t enjoy vaping with it at all. The change in taste and quality of the experience would be altered enough that you would wonder what you are vaping.

Propylene Glycol has the effect of a thinning agent in the e-liquid and its best state of existence and quality is when it is stored and used at room temperature. Vegetable Glycerin is a sweeting ingredient and is used as a thickening agent. When it gets too cold it can become too thick and the sugar that is contained in the substance can become caramelized, making the mixture too thick to be effective in vaping.

When e-liquid is stored for longer periods of time in the fridge, condensation can form inside of the bottle itself, due to the damp conditions of refrigeration. Also, there is microbiological material inside of most refrigerators which can cause bacteria to grow inside of the bottles. This usually occurs in the headspace of the bottle which is the air pocket that exists in the top of the bottle. This will tend to breakdown the stability of the juice in bottle.

The misconception of many who define a "cool, dark place" for storage as the refrigerator can have serious consequences to most vaping liquids. Room temperature is in most cases the best environment for e-liquids to maintain their freshness and longevity. When you purchase e-juices, you expect them to be available at the original flavor and freshness when you use them. You certainly don't want the item to be any less than what you expect when you purchase the item.

However, the result of your ability to store the e-liquid has a great deal to do with how it performs when you vape. Knowing the consequences of what occurs during the wrong type of storage is key to the result of your liquid use. One alternative to worrying too much about storing juice is to purchase smaller quantities that will be used up quickly, rather than having to store it for any length of time. Or, simply find a place to store it at room temperature in and dark place.
